New data from AutoTrader shows South Africa’s most popular online used vehicle searches for body type.
The online car market saw an all-time high of over 319 million online vehicle searches performed in the first half of 2021.
This is revealed in the 2021 report of the AutoTrader Mid-Year Industry Report, which provides precise data on the used car market in South Africa.
“We saw a 48% increase in searches by body type year over year, indicating that consumers have a greater need to search by body type. Consumer buying behavior in this area has also been influenced by more brands launching different forms of the ‘same’ model, ”AutoTrader said.
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Audi A3, for example, are both available in hatchback or sedan versions, while Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux are available in single, extended and double cabs.
As the fastest growing body type in the world, it was no surprise that SUVs had the highest body type searches on AutoTrader. Single and double cab bakkies, however, continued to generate high search volumes, so bakkies retain the highest regard from consumers if you combine single and double cabins.
Volkswagen conducts body type specific research, appearing in 4 of the top 6 categories and dominating the top 3 sedans.
